CASPER, WYOMING - The Wyoming School Boards Association has tabled a proposal that would have required schools around the state to teach students about American Indian history and culture.

Members of the association voted on Wednesday to table a resolution that would have required all schools to teach students about Wyoming tribes.

Members expressed concern about how the resolution would be funded. They also questioned whether the state Legislature should tell local districts what their curriculum should be.

Delegates who proposed the resolution say it's important for students to have accurate information about Native American people. The two recognized tribes in the state, the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone, supported the proposal.

If this where to happen and more people where enlightened about the actual truth in our Native American history then maybe people wouldn’t be so critical and more and more relationships could be developed to enhance the communities and state.

Whether the ignorance was meant or not, I believe that if students and teachers where educated and given the factual truth about the hardships and tragic endeavors each tribe has historically (pre-1900 and after) encountered then maybe the ignorant would have some kind of realization and not be so critical towards Native Americans in this state as well as other Tribes in the United States.

As an enrolled Tribal member of The Northern Arapaho Tribe who attended Fremont County School District # 1 from first grade to my high school graduation I was subjected to the ignorance of (Not All, but most) teachers, coaches, and students belittling, insulting, and discriminating against Native Americans.

I strongly believe it's relevant for Wyoming schools to implement and strategically apply the actual reality in Wyoming history involving the Eastern Shoshone Tribe and Northern Arapaho Tribe as well as previous tribes that once subsisted in the State before the “settlers”, instead of the candy coding that text books and teachers have provided and are providing now.
