Yellowstone Winter Use

By Penny Preston

CODY, WYOMING - Park managers say they will open Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks in time for the winter season, as directed by federal judge Clarence Brimmer. They'll allow 720 snowmobiles in daily. But, snowmobile and snowcoach operators near Yellowstone's East Gate are still unsure about the future.

Snowmobile guide Gary Fales has seen winter use go from many, to few, the winter scene in Yellowstone has changed in recent years. Fales commented, “You go in there and it’s very organized and controlled and it’s not very crowded. It’s a very nice situation right now.”

Fales is frustrated that lawsuits and changing park plans have kept him from making long range plans. He explained, “Every year they say this is your last year. I mean I’ve heard that for the last eight years. I mean this is my last year. So you don’t buy any snowmobiles, you don’t do any advertising.”

Fales is the East Gate’s only sled operator. The only snowcoach operator, Jon Sowerwine, says he hasn’t decided whether he’ll go into the park this winter. But, Park managers say the most recent court decision allows them to open on time this winter, while they work on another long term plan.

Wyoming State Representative Colin Simpson said, "That administrative rulemaking process continues with the comments on the environmental assessment due Monday, and the comments on the proposed rule due Wednesday."

Simpson warns Judge Brimmer’s decision to reinstate the 2004 temporary winter use plan could be appealed and stayed. Operators like Gary Fales know that things could change again, and are waiting to take reservations until they’re sure when the park will be open this winter.

When asked about the possibility of future lawsuits against the Parks' guide requirements, Simpsons said, “I think whatever the Park does they get sued by someone.”
