SHERDIAN, WYOMING - State game officials have discovered mule deer infected with chronic wasting disease for the first time in two hunting areas near Buffalo and Kaycee.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department says one mule deer buck was harvested earlier this month near Lake DeSmet in deer hunt area 26. The other buck was harvested in deer hunt area 29, about seven miles east of Kaycee.

The brain disease affects deer, elk and moose, but is not known to be harmful to humans. The Game and Fish Department says people hunting in areas where the disease is known to exist should wear rubber or latex gloves when field dressing or butchering any animal.

The department also recommends that hunters in those areas avoid transporting any part of an animal's spinal column or head with meat or nerve tissue attached. Those parts should be left at the site or disposed of in an approved landfill.
