Jackson Hole airport won't be shut down

JACKSON, WYOMING - Officials in Jackson and Teton County have come up with a plan to provide law enforcement for the Jackson airport through the busy ski season.

Operation of the airport was threatened when Teton County Sheriff Bob Zimmer said he would pull the badges of the airport's law enforcement officers over liability issues and other concerns. Currently, the airport's three officers work as sheriff's deputies but are paid by, and work for, the Jackson Hole Airport Board.

The federal government requires a law enforcement presence at or near the airport during security screening operations. Without law enforcement, the airport could not operate. Zimmer and the airport director and Jackson Town Manager negotiated a plan last week that will keep law enforcement at the airport until next April. Details of the agreement are still being worked out.

State Senator Grant Larson of Jackson says he's considering legislation to solve the problem by allowing Wyoming airports to have their own police forces.
