Dry Fork clears environmental challenge

GILLETTE, WYOMING - The state Environmental Quality Council has rejected some arguments by environmental groups against a coal-fired power plant under construction near Gillette.

The decision means construction of the 385-megawatt Dry Fork Station power plant will continue. Work began about a year ago. The $1 billion plant is owned by Basin Electric Power Cooperative.

Although the plant met air quality standards, the Sierra Club, the Powder River Basin Resource Council and the Wyoming Outdoor Council contend Basin Electric should be required to install better equipment and controls to reduce emissions.

The council denied the groups' argument that the state Department of Environmental Quality should have considered cleaner technologies before issuing an air permit for the plant.
