CODY, WYOMING - A plan to explore for natural gas in northern Wyoming has some residents and environmental groups concerned. But developers say it is too soon to know if major drilling will follow.

Bill Barrett Corp., a Colorado-based company specializing in exploratory oil and gas operations, has begun preparations to drill on state-owned land and has applied for a drilling permit at a nearby site administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Initial plans are to drill up to seven wells and to build a compressor plant, a pipeline and roads on state and federal land in the McCullough Peaks area just north of U.S. 14-16-20, about 20 miles east of Cody. Two additional wells may be drilled on adjacent state land.

Opponents say widespread development could affect sage grouse and wild horse habitat. But the company says the extent of development is not known right now.
