Industry to challenge BLM Pinedale plan

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Some oil and gas producers are looking to challenge the Bureau of Land Management's newest proposal for long-term management of its land in the Pinedale area of southwest Wyoming.

Officials with the Denver-based Independent Petroleum Association of Mountain States say they'll file a protest in hopes of getting more study and public comment on the BLM plan. Any protests of the BLM plan must be filed by Sept. 22. The BLM will study any protests and decide whether they have merit.

The BLM owns about 1,875 square miles of mineral estate in an area it administers out of its Pinedale office. The land contains rich deposits of natural gas and migration routes for deer and pronghorn. The situation has created conflicting interests between energy companies that want to tap the oil and gas and conservationists and others who enjoy wildlife and open space.

The BLM is currently managing the area under a plan that dates back to 1988, before oil and gas development became such a big issue.
