CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Gov. Dave Freudenthal has called on legislative leaders to reactivate a property tax exemption he says could save the typical homeowner up to nearly $300 a year.

Freudenthal last week wrote to the chairmen of the Legislature's Joint Revenue Committee proposing that they consider reactivating the state's homestead property tax exemption. Freudenthal says granting homeowners an exemption of $3,000 to $5,000 on the assessed value of their property would save them between $184 and $291 a year on taxes.

The governor's office says such a program would cost the state from $29 million to $56 million. State Rep. Rodney "Pete" Anderson says the Revenue Committee already voted to pursue such legislation in next year's legislative session.
