CODY, WYOMING - A fire burning between Cody and Yellowstone National Park is putting up a lot of smoke in the area.

Fire officials say the Gunbarrel fire is burning actively in the lower portion of the Big Creek drainage. Strong winds Thursday caused the fire to spread actively until about sunset. Fire crews are positioned at a ranch and other buildings in the area, where they have been working for several days to strengthen defensible space and install sprinklers. Additional crews continue to work in Libby Creek and elsewhere on the west end of the fire near U.S. 14-16-20.

A community meeting about the fire is planned for Friday.
