CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Wyoming's top elected officials have approved leasing 34 acres of state land in western Wyoming for a proposed plant that will produce methane and helium as well as store resulting greenhouse gas underground.

Denver-based Cimarex Energy Co. says the Riley Ridge plant will be the largest carbon sequestration project in the world, injecting 3 million tons of carbon dioxide per year back into the earth. The plant is slated to be built on tall sagebrush terrain at the base of the Wyoming Range in Sublette County.

The project is still subject to permitting approval by the Bureau of Land Management and Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality. In order to get the lease, Cimarex agreed with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department to create a mitigation fund of up $1.55 million that will go to monitoring the project's effect on elk and improving elk habitat.
