Losing Wyoming history?

CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Preservation experts say Wyoming needs to do more to support preservation of the state's historical resources.

They say historic school buildings are being lost in order to meet Wyoming Supreme Court mandates on public school building standards. Interim state historic preservation officer Mary Hopkins says she would like to see a Wyoming registry of historic places established. The registry would allow the state to decide what is and isn't of historic value, rather than relying on the national historic register. She also would like to see a policy statement that recognizes the importance of historic preservation and financial incentives for property owners of historic buildings.

A panel of experts discussed challenges in Wyoming preservation during a historic preservation conference in Cheyenne this week.
