Barrasso critical of polar bear listing

LANDER, WYOMING - Sen. John Barrasso says protecting polar bears under the Endangered Species Act could cripple Wyoming's economy and threaten the well-being of the country.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne announced this week that polar bears are now listed as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act because of global warming.

Barrasso's office issued a statement questioning the wisdom of the decision and warning of possible dire consequences for Wyoming from resulting federal regulations. But conservationists dismissed the Wyoming Republican's claim as a scare tactic and called it part of an ongoing campaign to undermine the power of the Endangered Species Act.
