CHEYENNE, WYOMING - The Wyoming Board of Education has unanimously rejected an appeal of a proposed charter school in Cheyenne.

Nine state board members voted Monday to uphold the decision by the Laramie County School District 1 school board to deny the application from the Cheyenne Classical Academy. The state board says there were substantial reasons to deny the application, including problems with the curriculum and the planned facility.

However, some state board members said the application process for charter schools needs to be improved because of the confusion under the current process. Supporters of the Cheyenne charter school say they plan to reapply to the local school board.

A charter school is a public school but has its own board of directors who can hire employees and adopt a different curriculum than the one the school district has approved.
