CHEYENNE, WYOMING - Authorities are still investigating what caused a small airplane to crash north of Cheyenne Monday. Laramie County Sheriff's Department spokesman Gerry Luce says the crash happened during nearly whiteout conditions just before 4 p.m.

Luce says the plane hit the ground in a field about 29 miles north of Cheyenne, along I-25. He says it appears the airplane had stopped for refueling in Casper on Monday afternoon. Josh Cawthra is an investigator with the National Transportation Safety Board. He says the pilot was the only person in the plane. He says it was headed to Kansas.

Cawthra says his agency is just starting its investigation into the cause of the crash. He said the 2003 Glasair III airplane was registered in Canada. Laramie County Coroner Martin Luna says he expects to be able to release the identity of the pilot Wednesday.
