Black Hills snowpack: "Best it's been in years."

RAPID CITY, S.D. - A new survey indicates that snow in the Black Hills National Forest contains more water, helping create what one official calls the best spring snowpack in years.

Sunday, Natural Resources Conservation Service officials measured 9 inches of moisture in a 24-inch base. That's 140% of the 30-year average.

Keith Culver of the NRCS says it's the best spring snowpack he's seen in a long time. Last year, barely 6 inches of snow held only 1.5 inches of water. But there's still plenty of snow this year. Experts say more water will seep into the soil rather than empty into reservoirs because the ground under the snow is not frozen. The Black Hills National Forest is located in southwest South Dakota and northeast Wyoming.
