POWELL, WYOMING - Powell Fire Chief Joey Darrah says people should be punished when they burn off vegetation on their property but don't bother to tell firefighters ahead of time.

Powell firefighters rushed to the scene of an unreported controlled fire this week. At the same time, the Fire Department was needed to fight a fire that was a real emergency. Darrah says that besides being dangerous, false alarms are costly. He says each one costs taxpayers over $500 an hour.

Park County officials say they've received about 200 calls requesting permission for controlled burns so far this month.
