CODY, WYOMING - A dead raccoon from the Cody area has tested positive for canine distemper virus, a deadly disease that affects dogs' digestive, nervous and respiratory systems.

The virus occurs naturally in wild animals but can infect domestic dogs that aren't vaccinated against the disease. The disease was confirmed at the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory, and officials there said the case is a reminder for people to use caution near sick or dead animals.

Cases of canine distemper have dropped dramatically over the years because people have been more vigilant about getting their pets vaccinated. Officials at the veterinary lab said canine distemper can nonetheless spread among wildlife including foxes, skunks and coyotes.
