GILLETTE, WYOMING - A potentially toxic orange cloud from an open-pit coal mine was seen drifting near Gillette on Sunday. Doug Emme, a blasting engineer with the state Department of Environmental Quality, said officials at the Caballo mine followed normal procedure in notifying the agency after setting off the explosion.

Emme said the orange cloud probably resulted from an incomplete blast at the mine and likely contained a variety of gases including nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen dioxide can cause eye, nose and throat irrigation. Emme said the cloud probably wasn't a threat because it was some distance above the ground. He said his agency would investigate if it received complaints.
