House defeats bicycle safety billCHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — The state House has defeated a bill that would have required motorists to stay at least 3 feet away from bicyclists they are passing on the road. The measure on Wednesday fell one vote short of the majority needed to pass the House. The measure passed two previous House floor votes but failed to get the 31 votes to pass on its final reading. The vote was 30-28. Proponents of the bill said it would reduce fatalities and injuries by making the roadway safer for bicyclists. But opponents argued that it is only common sense for motorists to stay as far away from bicyclists as they can and that the proposed law would be difficult to enforce. said on Friday, Jan 28 at 12:25 PM I've had motorists regularly pass within 1 foot of myself. drivers don't pay attention to the road anymore, they're more focused on their radio or cell phone said on Thursday, Jan 27 at 11:39 AM Not murdering or stealing is common sense too, and there are laws. Why not just add it to the books? It takes little effort. said on Wednesday, Jan 26 at 7:05 PM It's pretty hard to argue with what the opponents claim. I really can't imagine a motorist doing otherwise except in the case of psychopaths who certainly would wait until there were no witnesses around anyway. I guess that's why, nationally, prosecutions under such laws are very rare. Add a comment |
