Wyoming lawmakers take another look at marriage

Tools

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — At least two Republican state lawmakers plan to co-sponsor a resolution on the definition of marriage.

State law defines marriage as a legal union between a man and woman, but Wyoming also recognizes marriages performed in other states. Rep. Owen Petersen of Mountain View says that raises questions about what happens when gay couples from other states move to Wyoming.

Petersen and Sen. Curt Meier of LaGrange say they plan to co-sponsor a resolution that would let voters decide whether to amend the state constitution to clarify.

Legislators in 2009 proposed letting voters decide whether to amend the state constitution to specify that Wyoming wouldn't recognize same-sex marriages performed elsewhere, but the legislation failed.

It is about time someone defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

I will bet you my entire life savings that Rep. Petersen and Sen. Curt Meier don't personally know a single gay person. Yet they are threatened by something that will have absolutely NO effect on their lives. That is the bigotry, fear and paranoia that homophobia causes. Ask either one of them how same-sex marriage will harm their lives or marriages (or their children), and I sincerely doubt you'll get a rational answer... because there isn't one. Do their marriages have a negative effect on my life? Of course not. How could they? Conservatives preach about the non-interference of government in the personal lives of its citizens. Apparently, that rule only applies to wealthy heterosexual Christians. Perhaps they should make that more clear to their ignorant followers.

Go ahead, make my day. If anything happens to my wife of 7 years or myself during one of our twice a year visits to WY, and our legal marriage is disregarded, we will be in court. Wyoming taxpayers will lose the costs of defending this boneheaded prejudice, as well as any sense of dignity. Equality State voters need to vote on who gets to make my end of life health care choices? Please. Defend marriage, go to counseling instead of filing for divorce.

Is this a joke? Please stop using gays as a wedge issue, and actually do a little governing. It's getting very old hearing this garbage every week. YOUR RELIGION IS NOT IN THE CONSTITUTION AND IT DOES NOT RULE THE COUNTRY. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEADS.

"If your marriage needs protection, you need a therapist, not legislation." That would make a great bumper sticker! Thanks, Jim! I do agree, though, that this seems to be much ado about little. I wish Republicans would stick to working with the rest of the legislature and their citizens who they serve to focus on issues that would benefit the whole population, like energizing the economy, helping the unemployed and poor, and seeking to unify its citizenry instead of driving apart a minority of our people. To the legislature and all public servants, hear this: marriage equality will happen throughout the land one way or another in time, so why not focus on the issues that help all citizens live a better life? Please inspire us to be of service to all our fellow citizens; don't perpetuate division and prejudice! Happy New Year to all of you!

This has nothing to do with gay marriage and everything to do with the fact that your legislators think you are dumb. They think you are so dumb, that when this law is struck down in court, that you will buy every single line about how "activist judges are subverting the will of the people" and fill their campaign coffers and PAQ bank accounts with cash donations to keep fighting a fight that they have absolutely no intention of winning. You're a walking meat bag cash machine to them. They don't care about the gays, they just care about keeping you dumb and fearful. It's profitable.

The GOP legislature can probably do this, but remember to ask them who they expect to pay the cost of defending it in Federal Court. The Full Faith and Credit Clause of the US Constitution(Article 4, section 1) prohibits exactly this kind of discrimination. You will be sued, and you will lose. Count on it.

Have you ever met a Republican straight man who really was concerned about homosexuals or same sex marriage? The only men who are soooo concerned about these topics are closet cases (examples: George Rekers, Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, Ken Mehlman, etc., etc.).

I strongly support this move to constitutionally ban gay marriage in Wyoming. Fortunately, with the election of a lot more Republicans in the state legislature and a pro-traditional marriage governor, there is a better chance than ever before to make it work. The House majority went from 41-19 Republican to 50-10 Republican and in the state senate from 23-7 to 26-4. I think this is a great opportunity to do what's right and give Wyoming voters a chance to have their say on the important issue of the definition of marriage.

The gay marriage debate is a complete smokescreen. The real debate should be whether government should be invovled in the marriage licensing business or otherwise. The Government Free Marriage movement looks to redefine the dialogue of this debate to not whether one is pro/con gay marriage, but getting government out, to which all sides can agree. Solve the problem, support the Government Free Marriage movement. Government Free Marriage now!

Is gay couples marrying elsewhere then moving to Wyoming really a problem in the Equality State? Is this the sort of problem that needs to be solved by the party of small government and individual liberty? Surely the legislature can find something useful to do instead of legislating hate.
