18 horses adopted at Wyoming Honor Farm

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The Wyoming Honor Farm has held its final wild horse adoption program of the year.

Inmates at the minimum-security prison near Riverton train the horses and 38 were put up for adoption during the final two-day program of the year on Aug. 27 and 28.

Of those, 18 were adopted — 16 saddle-trained horses and two halter-started horses.

The Wyoming Department of Corrections says the average price paid was $532. The highest bid was $5,075 was the highest bid.

The horses that weren't adopted will continue to be trained and offered at the next adoption in May.

The Bureau of Land Management estimates that there are about 5,000 wild horses living in Wyoming. Officials would like to reduce the number to between 2,700 and 3,700.
