Early Wyo. rancher getting Confederate headstoneCHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — An early Wyoming rancher and businessman who fought on the side of the South in the Civil War will get a new Confederate headstone. The Casper Star-Tribune reports John C. Hunton's marker will be unveiled Friday at his Cheyenne grave. It replaces a simple white headstone with the initials J.H. Hunton fought at Gettysburg and Bull Run and was taken prisoner by the Union. Bev Holmes of the Wyoming Pioneer Association says Hunton's new marker is believed to be the only Confederate headstone in Wyoming. Hunton went West in 1867 and was a storekeeper at Fort Laramie and had a ranch near Chugwater. He kept a diary treasured by historians for its details of Wyoming life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Hunton died in 1928 at age 89. ___ Information from: Casper Star-Tribune - Casper, http://www.trib.com |
