Libraries blame technology for dropping numbers

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Is technology leaving old-fashioned books gathering dust on library shelves?

The Laramie County Library System says its books are being cracked less frequently, and librarians suspect e-readers and other technology may be the cause.

The library system says that library card registration for the system, which includes the libraries in Cheyenne, Burns and Pine Bluffs, was down about 18.6 percent in the last fiscal year.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports that circulation of print materials for adults was down about 3.4 percent. And attendance at adult programs was down by about 11 percent.

County Librarian Lucie Osborn says electronic books could be one factor driving down library usage.
