GRAN TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Visits to Grand Teton National Park were up 5 percent last month as more vacationers seek low-cost fun.

The park recorded 598,412 visitors last month, compared to 568,122 visitors for August of last year. Last month was the busiest August in the last 10 years.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide reports that employees saw crowded roads and full campgrounds.

For the year, the park is seeing about 4 percent more visitors than last year. The park has recorded 2.9 million visitors so far this year, compared to 2.8 million by this time in 2009.

Park spokeswoman Jackie Skaggs says regional travelers are staying closer to home and visiting nearby national parks.
