First man convicted of murder in Sheridan killing

SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) — A jury has convicted the first of three defendants of first-degree murder in the home invasion killing of an elderly businessman in Sheridan last year.

The Sheridan Press reports that the jury deliberated about three hours on Thursday before finding 20-year-old Dennis Poitra Jr. guilty in the killing of 79-year-old Robert Ernst.

Ernst died after being shot in his home during a burglary just over a year ago.

The jury also convicted Poitra of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary and aggravated burglary. Poitra faces a sentence of up to life in prison when sentenced later.

Two teenagers facing similar charges in the killing have yet to stand trial.
