Wyo. school districts slowly spend stimulus money

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming has been slow to spend its $64 million in federal stimulus money for elementary and secondary education.

The state Education Department reports show that little more than one-fourth of the state's stimulus funding for K-12 public education has been spent.

The one-time money must be allocated before Sept. 30, 2011, and spent before Dec. 31, 2011.

Districts submitted plans in October 2009 outlining how they planned to spend in four areas: high-poverty students and schools, neglected and delinquent students, special education and transitioning preschool children to kindergarten.

Wyoming received an additional $8.6 million in school improvement grants this month to turn around low-achieving schools.
