New Wyoming oil and gas rules take effect Sept. 15CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — Starting Sept. 15, Wyoming will force the oil and gas industry to reveal details about chemicals used in drilling, hydraulic fracturing and other drilling operations. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is a process used to stimulate the flow of hydrocarbons. But fracking has also come under scrutiny for fear the process could contaminate drinking water supplies. Many different chemicals can be used in fracking, and the industry insisted it didn't have to disclose individual recipes because companies considered those proprietary. But officials with the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission say the information will be readily available under the new rules. While a company may request that specific fluid blends be kept confidential, commission supervisor Tom Doll said it will be a little more difficult to claim information is confidential. ___ Information from: Casper Star-Tribune - Casper, http://www.trib.com |
