GRAND TETON NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Authorities in Grand Teton National Park say an unwatched campfire started a wildfire on the northwest tip of Elk Island, in Jackson Lake.

The fire had burned about one-tenth of an acre. It was spotted Friday morning on the island, a popular site for boat camping.

Officials say the boater who had camped at the site on Thursday night had a fire permit but failed to extinguish his campfire before leaving the site on Friday morning.

The boater told authorities that he hadn't noticed that the fire was still smoldering when he left the site at about 2 a.m.

Park rangers say it's imperative that visitors to the park extinguish all fires. Officials say they expects to have the fire contained by Friday evening.
