Bernanke to speak in Wyo. after mixed bag of econ. reportsWASHINGTON (AP) — Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke (bur-NANG'-kee) will speak Friday at a closely watched conference in Jackson Hole. The Fed chairman's speech comes a day after the Mortgage Bankers Association reported one in 10 American households with a mortgage was at risk of foreclosure this summer. That grim figure was met with a glimmer of good news in the jobs market. The Labor Department reported a modest decrease in the number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time in a month. But, last week's seasonally adjusted 473,000 filings is still too high to bring down the unemployment rate. Investors hope Bernanke's speech Friday will shed light on how weak the U.S. economy really is and whether the Fed may take more steps to revive it. |
