Bill would require public records to go online

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Sen. Jon Tester has introduced a bill that would require government agencies to publish all their public documents online in a free, indexed database.

The Montana Democrat says the proposal would provide better access to public records and eliminate the need for people to sift through boxes of documents or wait lengthy times for a public records request to be filled.

The bill, introduced Thursday, would create an advisory board that would set nonbinding guidelines for all three branches of government to post public information on the Internet.

But executive departments would be required to post its public records online. That includes any entity in the executive branch, including the Office of the President, plus military departments and government corporations.

That government is the strongest of which every man feels himself a part. No government ought to be without censors; and where the press is free no one ever will.
