E-mails: No pressure from Dems in poaching case

BILLINGS - Internal e-mails show top officials at the governor's office and Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks knew that a poaching investigation involved a prominent Republican who later went to work for Rep. Denny Rehberg.

But the e-mails show no evidence of political pressure in the case. The messages were released Wednesday in response to a freedom of information request from The Associated Press.

Randy Vogel, state director for Rehberg, has suggested the allegations stem from Democratic attempts to smear Rehberg's name. Vogel has pleaded not guilty.

Two weeks before Vogel was charged, a chain of e-mails was passed from game wardens all the way up to Gov. Brian Schweitzer's office. A Fish Wildlife and Parks spokesman says Schweitzer's office was notified out of courtesy.
