MISSOULA - Missoula fire investigators say grease buildup in an outdoor barbecue grill helped cause fire and explosion that damaged a historic local home.

Investigator Gordy Hughes says the blaze was reported Friday evening and caused about $90,000 worth of damage. He says the fire started after owners Mark and Susan Estep took a couple of steaks off their grill. When Mark Estep looked out his kitchen window, he saw flames around the barbecue spreading to the exterior of the home.

Hughes says the couple tried to knock the fire with portable fire extinguishers and then called for help. He says the couple fled the home before the propane tank exploded, blasting the fire inside the home as well.

Hughes says people should make sure to clean greasy buildup off their barbecues.
