HELENA - Town Pump says it will pay to repair as many as 20 vehicles that were damaged after an underground tank meant for premium unleaded fuel at a Helena gas station was accidentally filled with diesel.

Company spokeswoman Maureen Kenneally says that between 15 and 20 customers were affected by Wednesday's mistake.

Diesel quickly clogs the fuel filter of a conventional engine, and the vehicle essentially suffocates within a mile or two of driving.

Kenneally says a system that manages fuel inventory sensed the error and customers also complained to the local store, which is at the corner of North Montana and Prospect avenues.

Red Mountain Truck Lines, the company that delivered the fuel, is reimbursing Town Pump for its expenses.
