MONTANA - Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks has closed part of the Yellowstone River to fishing from 2 p.m. to midnight. The closure runs from Yellowstone National Park to the Huntley Diversion. The restriction begins just after midnight Friday. Officials worry that high temperatures and low water flows are too hard on fish. They say restrictions will most likely stay in place until the end of August or September.
Low streamflows and higher water temperatures have led to more fishing closures in Montana. Fishing will be restricted on the Blackfoot River and banned on the Blackfoot drainage's bull trout streams, beginning Thursday. The Blackfoot River restrictions will prohibit fishing between 2 p.m. and midnight and will apply from the headwaters near Rogers Pass to the Blackfoot's confluence with the Clark Fork River at Milltown.
The Upper Big Hole River is closed to fishing entirely, while the Bitterroot, Clark Fork, Gallatin, Jefferson, Madison, Smith, Sun and Thompson rivers have 2 p.m. to midnight restrictions.
Also, the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation encouraged water conservation encouraged conservation among irrigators and residential consumers. Agency Director Mary Sexton said watering trees may be more important than watering grass. Any of those listed above are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
