HELENA - Helena attorney Beth Baker became the first to file for a Supreme Court seat that is opening up with the retirement of Justice William Leaphart.

Baker works at a private law firm, but was previously an assistant attorney general and chief deputy at the Montana Department of Justice.

Baker said Thursday she would bring balance to the position with a variety of experience. The lawyer points out she worked for both Republican and Democrat attorneys general at the Justice Department.

Leaphart, who was first elected to the court in 1994, announced Wednesday he will not seek another eight-year term on the court.
