Brucellosis Buffer Zone: Not Buff

HELENA - The idea of a Brucellosis Buffer Zone around Yellowstone National Park is gaining the attention of state and federal officials. A buffer zone has been a topic of discussion for over two years now.
But, the Montana Stockgrowers Association says the idea is a step in the wrong direction. "Putting a buffer zone or regionalization area is still not going to address the brucellosis issue," said Jay Bodner of the Montana Stockgrowers Association. "It's not going to reduce the incidence of Brucellosis within either the bison herd or the elk herd. And so I think that's really where the focus needs to be taken is that we need to look at the disease and how do we clean up that disease, how do we reduce that disease within those species?"
If implemented, Brucellosis-infected cattle found within the buffer zone would not count against the rest of the state's Brucellosis-free status. But the Montana Stockgrowers Association fears that this stipulation will mean nothing to surrounding states and potential buyers.
