West Montana lawmaker getting property tax complaints

KALISPELL - A western Montana lawmaker is planning to hold a town meeting because he's been swamped with complaints about property tax increases.

Republican Rep. Scott Reichner of Bigfork has scheduled the meeting in his hometown on Thursday night. Montana appraises its property taxes every six years. This time around, appraisals angered many owners who saw their property taxes skyrocket, while the market value of their property dropped.

Reichner says he heard that an 82-year-old widow saw her property tax assessment increase from $450,000 in 2002 to $2.7 million.
