Great Falls' trail system grows in 2009

GREAT FALLS - City officials in Great Falls say 2009 has been an active year for trail construction with miles of new trails added for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The city's dedicated bicycle and pedestrian trails grew to an estimated total of 41 miles. The separate trails are considered safer than traditional bike lanes on streets.

Doug Wicks, president of Recreational Trails Inc. and a part-time employee of the city planning staff, says the city made progress this year on the River's Edge Trail and other outlying connections.

Trail construction has benefited from federal stimulus spending. Wicks says stimulus dollars are contributing to the construction of new paved recreational trails on the Missouri River's west bank.
