Missoula considers downtown no-sleeping zone

MISSOULA - The Missoula City Council's Public Safety and Health committee has passed a motion barring sleeping within 12 feet of either side of a downtown business entrance.

But business owners and others complained the proposal approved Wednesday won't help solve downtown's transient problem. They say Missoula police need authority to deal with the problem. But supporters of the 12-foot zone say anything more restrictive would be cruel and possibly violate the rights of the homeless.

The vote was 5-3 in favor of the buffer zone. The measure now goes to the full council for consideration.
