BILLINGS - Three members of a Saco-area family have been fined and given probationary sentences for their roles in a wildlife poaching scheme.

U.S. District Judge Jack Shanstrom on Wednesday placed 74-year-old Leo Bergtoll on three years of federal probation while his 44-year-old son, Darrel Bergtoll was sentenced to 3 years and four months of federal probation.

Both were ordered to allow their land to be used in the Wounded Warriors Project for injured veterans for three years and enroll their property in a state program that allows public hunting access for five years without any financial compensation.

Anna Lou Bergtoll was sentenced to two years of federal probation and, along with her husband, Leo, lost her hunting and fishing privileges for five years. All three were fined $15,000.

The Bergtolls were accused of running a high-volume, big game hunting operation based on the fraudulent use of state Fish, Wildlife and Parks landowner-sponsored licensing program.
