Butte teen wins national carpentry contest

BUTTE - Recent Butte High graduate Jake Richards won the Skills USA national championship for carpentry.

The contest, held June 24 in Kansas City, Mo., included a 50-question written evaluation and several building projects. He won thousands of dollars worth of tools, a medal and a scholarship.

Richards plans to major in civil engineering at Montana Tech with an emphasis on construction and welding. Richards won the state Skills USA carpentry championship all four years in high school and finished fourth in the national competition as a junior.
