BOZEMAN - A 37-year-old Bozeman man accused of shooting his former girlfriend and burning her body has pleaded not guilty.

Jay Myran entered his pleas Wednesday in District Court to charges of deliberate homicide and tampering with evidence in the death of 53-year-old Gayle Brewster of Three Forks.

Authorities arrested Myran on June 9 after discovering Brewster's remains in a burn barrel near the house she had been renting. Brewster had been missing since May 12. Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert says the state will not seek the death penalty. Myran remains jailed on $1 million bail.

Myran's 14-year-old son, Lance, also is charged with tampering with evidence after his father told investigators that his son helped him lift Brewster's body into the burn barrel. Court records say Lance stayed home from school on May 13 to keep the fire going.
