Power, gas shut off at animal shelter

BUTTE - An animal shelter in Anaconda has lost its electricity and natural gas service for failing to pay a $3,500 bill.

Patricia Mulvey, co-operator of Pintler Pets, says the shelter has been unable to pay the bill because donations and fundraising efforts are down. She says NorthWestern Energy tried to work with the private shelter, which houses 170 cats and 25-to-30 dogs.

Volunteer Mike Knuth says they're running a propane heater during the day and using lanterns in windowless areas. He says a volunteer is taking a couple of the older cats home to keep them warm, and they plan to put out a bunch of blankets for the animals Tuesday night.

The shelter still has running water and other services. Shelter operators are seeking money to help pay the bill and restore the utility service.
