Wildlife commissioners to take up bison plan, again

HELENA - A state wildlife commissioner Friday plans to tour the Royal Teton Ranch north of Yellowstone National Park, as he considers a $3.3 million deal that would let a limited number of park bison pass through the ranch to access forest land.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission Thursday cast an initial vote of 2-2 on the deal involving the ranch owned by the Church Universal and Triumphant. But then commissioners indicated they'd likely reconsider after touring the ranch. Later in the day came the decision that only one of the commissioners, Doll, would make the tour.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks spokesman Ron Aasheim says the other commissioners have seen the property. The arrangement with the church is part of a package that state officials say would help manage bison that wander from Yellowstone. The migration concerns some Montana ranchers. They say the bison might transmit disease to grazing cattle.
