KALISPELL - Democratic vice presidential nominee Joe Biden is taking the campaign to the heart of conservative Montana.

On Sunday, Biden talked to voters in Flathead County, a place that gave Democrat John Kerry less than a third of the vote in 2004. But Biden says Barack Obama can win in Montana.

The Obama campaign isn't showing any fear about fighting in red states, building a Montana organization that features full-time staff, television advertising and 17 offices, some in places that have never seen a Democratic presidential campaign.

Biden pointed to Democrats the state has elected to high offices, talking up the success of Gov. Brian Schweitzer and freshman U.S. Sen. Jon Tester. Biden also praised legendary Montana U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield, who he credits with pushing him in the right direction early in his political career.
