MISSOULA - A 23-year-old man is dead after crashing his ATV just south of Missoula.

The Montana Highway Patrol says the incident happened at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday on a U.S. Forest Service road on Blue Mountain. The patrol says the man was riding with friends when he tried to make a left-hand turn on his four-wheeler and failed. Witnesses reported the ATV rolled five or six times.

The patrol says the victim wasn't wearing a helmet and the crash injured his skull. He was taken by medical helicopter to St. Patrick Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities say the man was a student at the University of Montana. However, his name was withheld pending notification of family.
