MISSOULA - Authorities have released the name of a 45-year-old Missoula man who apparently shot himself to death during a traffic stop.

Keith Wayne Krause, a registered violent offender, died of a gunshot wound to the head Friday. Missoula County Sheriff's Lt. Rich Maricelli says a police officer made the routine traffic stop at about 5:30 p.m. The officer spoke to the female driver and to Krause, the passenger, and then returned to his patrol car to run their names.

As the officer approached the vehicle again, Krause got out of the car and began to walk away. Witnesses say the officer used a stun gun on Krause, and that they heard a shot. Krause died at the hospital.

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident, and the county attorney's office likely will conduct a coroner's inquest, according to Missoula Police Department policy.
