HELENA - Authorities have arrested three Helena men accused of torturing and killing as many as two dozen cats, including three that were burned alive.

Twenty-six-year-old Brandon Hartford, 20-year-old Andrew Welch, and 19-year-old Kyle Hallowell face felony charges of aggravated animal cruelty. They're accused of "burning, stabbing, beating, slaughtering and torturing" the animals.

County detectives say the men hunted for cats at night. The detectives say the men told investigators that they had killed between 16 and 24 cats, stemming from their joint dislike of the animals. A woman who answered the phone at the county jail Thursday night said she didn't know if the men had hired attorneys.
