HELENA - The Montana Department of Environmental Quality says environmental cleanup at the site of a former Lewistown lumber mill could generate bills in six figures, or in excess of $21 million.

The agency has completed a report on the extent of contamination at the site of Berg Lumber Mill, which began operating in the 1970s and closed in 1994. The 31-acre property includes areas contaminated with petroleum and pentachlorophenol. That's commonly known as penta, and was used to treat wood.

The report evaluates potential cleanup at various levels. DEQ environmental science specialist Laura Alvey says the large span in possible costs partly reflects differences in the types of technology that could be employed.
