GREAT FALLS - The chairman of the annual East-West Shrine Bowl football game who's accused of embezzling $55,000 from the fundraiser has made his initial court appearance.

Prosecutors say 78-year-old Jerrold Evans wrote checks to himself from the organization's bank account during the past three years. According to charging documents filed Wednesday, Evans told a private investigator that an alcohol and gambling problem led him to steal money from ticket sales and donations.

The all-star game for the previous year's top high school seniors has raised more than $1 million for the Shriners' pediatric hospital in Spokane, Washington.
